Applying sunscreen correctly is not only about the brand. The amount, the timing and when you reapply matter just as much. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) sums it up in a few simple rules.
Sunscreen rules from dermatologists

- Choose broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, water resistant. Broad-spectrum protects against UVA and UVB rays.
- Use enough. For the face, the AAD suggests at least one teaspoon, about the length of your index and middle fingers. For all exposed skin, about one ounce, or a shot glass.
- Apply before going outside. Skin needs about 15 minutes to absorb sunscreen and be protected.
- Reapply about every two hours outdoors, or after swimming or sweating, following the label.
- Remember your neck, ears and lips. For lips, the AAD suggests a lip balm or lipstick with SPF 30 or higher.
The AAD also notes that up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds, so you still need sunscreen on cloudy days.
Morning order

Sunscreen is the last skincare step in the morning, before makeup. After cleansing and moisturizing, apply enough sunscreen and let it absorb before your cushion or foundation.
Tinted sunscreen to prevent dark spots
Visible light from the sun can worsen skin darkening, especially in medium to dark skin tones. The AAD recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen labeled “tinted” with SPF 30 or higher, because it contains iron oxide, which helps protect against visible light. This is especially useful while you fade dark spots.
